CHINESE students bearing Chinese flags so fresh they still had the crease marks of their packaging filled a corner of bushland on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, a scene that was mirrored along much of the Canberra leg of the Beijing Olympic torch relay yesterday.

But along with their chants of "come on, Olympics, come on, Beijing" were broad smiles, Australian flags painted on cheeks and an atmosphere so friendly that the only danger I perceived was being hit in the head by an overzealous flag waver.

In the public relations exercise that was the Canberra part of the global relay, the 10,000 pro-Chinese spectators clearly outweighed the 1500 pro-Tibetan protesters.

The Chinese had been brought by bus in their thousands and did their part well: positioning themselves before dawn at critical points and perceived hot spots.

I was in the first shuttle bus of six runners when the torch was rowed across Lake Burley Griffin. We had heard there were some disturbances at Reconciliation Place across the way and when a plane sky-wrote the words "Free Tibet", it created apprehension in the waiting convoy of riot police and Australian Federal Police officers.

Some officers were sent ahead to check garbage cans for bombs at the last moment. In the bus we discussed the big question: what lay ahead? What indeed.

The convoy took off and I was dropped 300 metres down Parkes Way to wait - although I snuck a quick photo with my daughter, one of a few Canberrans dotted in a forest of Chinese faces.

An AFP officer called Josh introduced himself, ensured that the flame attendant in blue unkeyed the torch - but nothing else - and then directed me to my spot. I lit the torch from the flame held by a Chinese world champion speed skater, Qiaobo Ye.

The rest is a bit of a red blur, I just remember smiling a lot and sensing that the crowd was running along the fence much faster than me, although way too soon I got to the equestrian Olympian Neale Lavis.

The police surrounding me on the run were unobtrusive and evoked a sense of calm. I was blissfully unaware of the policemen fending off the Chinese flame attendants. While the wide boulevards allowed for space and extra reaction time when any scuffles took place, the federal police's operation - at least as far as my small part - was outstanding.

I saw some protest signs but the reception from protesters, fans and the rent-a-crowd was warm and enthusiastic. It may have been a manufactured atmosphere direct from the People's Republic, but it was a colourful and memorable Olympic experience.
